Learning to cook is such an important life skill. Having your children in the kitchen with you is a great way to introduce them to cooking.
The Importance Of Cooking
Knowing how to cook for yourself is such an important skill.
My parents taught me, from a young age, how to cook. In high school, I was regularly cooking dinner and really enjoyed it. When I went to university, I was shocked by how many of my fellow students had no clue how to cook. They struggled to make themselves meals outside of macaroni and cheese or ramen noodles.
I am proud to say that, at 10 years old, my eldest already knows how to cook more than some of those people. Even my 8 year old is more comfortable in the kitchen than many of them.
Learning to cook is as easy as having your children in the kitchen with you.
I am a strong supporter of cooking at home.
Home cooked meals, from real ingredients, is a very important part of our lives. Having my children in the kitchen with me, while I cook, allow them to develop the skills to feed themselves from a very early age.
Our children come to the grocery store with us. They are apart of meal planning. Having our children in the kitchen with us for all aspects of the cooking process is important to our family.
Day In The Life
On an average day, our children help with at least one meal.
Recently, the boys took it upon themselves to delegate cooking days where they were responsible for cooking.
Before we go grocery shopping, we sit down and plan out what our meals are going to be. Some days we plan specific meals – like every Tuesday is Taco Tuesday. Ian, who is 5, loves helping out on Taco Tuesday. It is easy for him to prepare the lettuce and other ingredients as he learns knife skills and stove safety. Other days, the children will want to make specific meals.
This past week, Lucas really wanted to make salmon. He planned what vegetables and sides he wanted with his salmon and I helped him make his meal. He is comfortable enough in the kitchen that no longer is he helping me. Instead, I am helping him in the kitchen.
This is a result of having my children in the kitchen with me for years. If you are just introducing your 10-year-old to the kitchen, they might not feel this comfortable.
They will get there in time.
I hope you enjoyed this day in the life vlog that focuses on children in the kitchen.
