I am a large family mom and I have stopped making freezer meals. Shocker, I know. Why would I do this? Aren’t easy freezer meals a lifesaver? Not anymore!
I started making freezer meals when my eldest was diagnosed with a dairy allergy.
At the time, there were no dairy-free convenience foods on the market. The world was just opening its eyes to the realization that food allergies and food sensitivities were in fact a real thing. Peanut allergy warnings and peanut-free items were just starting to hit the grocery store shelves but there was no gluten-free section, no intentionally dairy free/vegan processed foods. There were no vegan frozen foods.
To make my life easier, as a working mom, I would spend my weekends making meals for our family to quickly eat during the workweek. My husband worked rotating shift work and my schedule was all over the place. We needed something easy.
My love for freezer meals was born.
Fast forward to when my 4th child was around 1 year old.
I had started my YouTube channel and had not really found my grove for what I wanted to post. After watching videos from The Large Family Table, I decided that maybe I could try filming my large family-style freezer meal process. I only had a handful of subscribers and, honestly, didn’t expect it to go anywhere.
Surprisingly, it gained traction. It by no means went viral, but it was one of my most successful videos for a very long time.
Since I frequently made easy freezer meals, I continued to film my process and my viewers really responded to them.
No More Freezer Meals
So, why did I stop making freezer meals?
I have simply come into a new season in my life. No longer am I working outside of the home. I am a stay at home, and working at home, mom who enjoys her time in the kitchen. Being able to cook for my family brings me joy.
We have also switched up how we eat.
A lot of recipes that I was using, and that I see all over Pinterest, are simply combining pre-made things like sauces with meat and grains. This kind of cooking no longer appeals to me. We have switched from a convenience diet, one that helped us get through the chaos some days, to a more minimalist and simple diet.
We try to keep minimally process foods stocked in our home. Ketchup, mustard, and barbeque sauce still exist in my home but no longer is my pantry stuffed full of canned and bottled food substitutes that I use to create dinners for the freezer.
A New Season In Life
We are in a new season of life.
For many years, I needed the convenience of a freezer stocked full of food to make it through the days. I shared my tips with the world because I wanted to help other moms.
But now we are in a new season of life.
Simple living with simple food is now the stage of life that we are in. I hope you will continue to follow our journey.
