Sometimes you need to slow down and take the time to make things from scratch. For me, homemade bagels gave me the perfect excuse to take that time.

Mindset Shift

We often rush through life and fill every moment of every day with something.

One thing that the lock down [because of global circumstances] showed me was that we filled our time with mindless activities and forgot to connect.

Being home all the time, allowed me to evaluate some of the decisions I was making in life. We were relying on quick foods to help us get to the next event. Buying things full of preservatives to help them last longer. Enjoying moments and each other on a very superficial level.

We were rushing through life.

I decided that this was not how I wanted to spend my time and things needed to change.

I wanted to slow down, be mindful, and create.

Homemade Bagels

One of the food items I challenged myself to learn how to make was bagels.

I had made many loaves of bread before but homemade bagels was something new. Bagels are complicated to make, right? I was nervous about making a mistake.

But then my friend shared a picture of her homemade bagels. I decided now was my time to try my hand at making homemade bagels.

The Recipe

Usually I spend hours, days even, scouring the internet for the perfect recipe. I usually have to try something many times before I get a final product that I am happy with.

But these homemade bagels were different.

I was very lucky that I had a friend who had been experimenting with making bagels of her own. She shared a recipe she enjoyed using… so I tried it.

The recipe is New York-Style Bagel Recipe by Sophisticated Gourmet.

Because of where we live, at altitude in a very dry climate, I usually have to heavily alter recipes. But this recipe was perfect from the beginning. I have shared this recipe with many friends in different locations and we have all had the same experience.
