We recently had the opportunity to learn about coal mines at Atlas Coal Mines, which is just outside of Drumheller Alberta.

After years of mining coal in Minecraft, it was a wonderful experience for the boys to be able to see what a coal mine actually looked like. We were able to ride in coal cars to tour the grounds and were able to go into some of the old, historical buildings on site. Our toddler is too young for us to have been able to participate in a tour of the actual mines but that is on the agenda in a few years.

We love being able to take opportunities like this. The summer does not mean we stop our learning experience. Homeschooling in the summer simply looks different than homeschooling in the winter.

Homeschooling In The Summer – Video

Check out this video I posted about this topic! It might give you some more insight into why we do what we do.

Learning In Nature

We love being able to learn in the nature. Homeschooling in the summer allows us to take advantage of experiences that we would otherwise miss out on.

We were able to hike in the mountains of Canmore Alberta the other week. Along the trail, we stopped and became mesmerized by the waterfall that cascaded down the side of the mountain.

My eldest son was absolutely fascinated.

He watched in amazement as the water flowed down the rocks. He listened to the sound of the water and truly absorbed the moment into his being.

When we got home, he learned all he could about waterfalls. He was motivated by the experience and because of our lifestyle he was able to fully take advantage of it. From the tallest waterfalls in the world to how waterfalls can be harnessed to produce electricity, he was inspired to learn.

When we reached the top of the trail, we were awestruck by a beautiful turquoise lake that greeted us.

For some, these might have just been any other hike in the mountains. For us, they were amazing opportunities to learn about the world around us.

An amazing opportunity from inspiration to research and learn more.

Incredible Opportunities

Homeschooling in the summer allows for some incredible opportunities and experiences.

Because we choose to see every moment as a learning opportunity, we do not see the summer as a time to take a break. We love seizing the moment and taking advantage whenever we can.

We had the opportunity to be the keepers and protectors to some caterpillars as they transformed into butterflies. Watching the metamorphosis of these caterpillars was amazing.

We watched the caterpillars grow and encase themselves into chrysalises. We waited patiently for our butterflies to emerge.

Learning about the food we could provide for these newly emerged butterflies and creating a habitat for them to live in before release was a wonderful experience.

On a beautiful summer morning, we released our butterflies into the world.
