Feeling burnt out by trying to get your children to love learning? We try all the different methods and approaches but nothing seems to work. How do I get my child to love learning?
Whether you are a homeschool parent, an unschooler, or if your children go to a brick and mortar school, we all face this from time to time.
Our children simply fall out of love with learning.
One thing to remember is that this is ok.
Interests Change
As an adult, I am sure your interests have changed at least a few times in your life (probably a lot of times, actually). We are no longer interested in the same things that caught our attention as a child. And, even as adults, our interests can change.
My Pinterest is an ongoing visual representation of this fact.
There are so many things on there that I absolutely needed to try and that inspired me in the moment but then never actually did. Some passions, like knitting, have been been explored and pinned for years and continue to be inspiring and enjoyable. Other things, like veganism, spark my interest for a time in my life and now that board full of delicious recipes rarely gets viewed. Some topics, like succulent propagation, never got further than about 50 pins and buying a handful of plants that died before I tried to propagate them (apparently, I am a terrible succulent parent).
We often forget that exploring new passions and new interests is learning. And we love learning in this way because it excites us.
Find The Excitement
When children fall out of love for learning, it is often because the excitement is gone. They are bored with the topic or the delivery method. Or perhaps the skill level of the child is not in alignment with the task at hand – whether they find the information overwhelming or boring because they have already done it 20 times and want something more challenging.
Children, and human beings in general, love to learn. We are curious creatures who have this innate desire to discover.
Let your child discover.
Think Outside The Box
Sometimes we think our children don’t love to learn because they are not interested in the things that we are trying to teach them.
What would your child teach you, if given the opportunity?
Would it be video games like Fortnite or Minecraft? Perhaps an animal they are passionate about like horses or turtles. They may even teach you about a world that you never knew they knew so much about – full of castles and knights.
They Love Learning
Our children love learning.
But sometimes it is just not the topic or way we want them to learn in that moment of time.
