Maths Invaders Online
If you grew up playing Space Invaders then you might feel a little nostalgic with this game.
I sure did.
The main game, Galactic Campaign, has you controlling a space ship which needs to defend the planets from descending math questions. The second game, Space Rescue, requires you to find ships hidden in the galaxy.
Both of these games allow the students to encounter many math problems in a short period of time. The difficulty increases little by little which helps build up confidence as you progress through the levels.
This is way better than doing page after page of math questions in a book. It is a lot less boring.
-my 10 year old son
Maths Invaders Online will help children with essential numeracy skills.
- Ages 5 to 15 and beyond!
- Players tackle 100s of questions in minutes
- Quickly develops automatic recall of essential maths facts
- Intrinsically motivating
- Endless fun
Maths Invaders Online starts with kindergarten level counting and simple addition. The counting images are all space themed, like counting space ships or planets. The program builds up to addition, subtraction, fractions, multiplication and division tables. As you progress, there are even more complicated calculations including powers and square roots which makes it great for all grade levels.
If your student is well above a kindergarten level, you can skip ahead or set practice levels to fit their needs. There is no need for your more advanced students to be bored by questions that are too easy!
Maths Invaders Online uses two different game modes, as well as a practice mode, to encourage children to have fun doing maths.
Galactic Campaign
I want to first point out what, I think, is the best part of this program: the Galactic Campaign which reminds me of Space Invaders. Space Invaders is an awesome retro video game and really makes this program visually appealing and, as you can see, my kids are really enjoying it as well.
You are a ship that moves horizontally along the bottom of the playing field and descending from the top are math questions. The challenge is to defend the planets from these math questions. You have to answer the questions correctly and shoot at the correct “space ship” in order to progress and level up.
The map for Galactic Campaign starts at a year one level, which is counting and simple addition questions. Depending on the level of your student, you can either start here and build up confidence as you progress to the level they are at, or you can skip ahead.
If you skip ahead, the student will need to complete a “test”.
It isn’t really a test – it is designed just like any other level. The test will make sure the student is able to do all the required types of math problems to move up to the next level of this Maths Invaders Online program. It is formatted just like the rest of the game levels but, if you do not do well enough, then the program will not let you jump ahead that far.
The Galactic Campaign part of Maths Invaders Online was the favourite part of this program for my 5-year-old. He recently has discovered that he does, in fact, know how to do addition and now LOVES quizzing everyone with his new found knowledge.
This program really helped to cement that confidence and help push him just a little bit further. Plus, he loves to shoot things so that was an added bonus.
Space Rescue
The second game from the Maths Invaders Online program is Space Rescue.
Space Rescue is a fun, multiplayer game that has the players hunting for hidden ships in the galaxy. Using math questions to fill up your scanner, you scan the map of the galaxy trying to locate and rescue the missing ships.
This game reminded my children of a mixture between Battleship and Minesweeper.
You have to pick different coordinates on the map to find where the ships are that need to be rescued. When you choose a square, you will either reveal a “no ship”, “near ship” or a ship piece. If you are the one to uncover the final segment of a ship, you receive the rescue bonus. In order to scan the map, you must fill up your scanner. To fill up your scanner, you have to answer math questions. The more questions you get correct, before the countdown reaches 0, the more likely you are to be able to scan the area. If you do not fully charge your scanner, you might get a failed scan for that turn.
Space Rescue can be played against computers or as a multiplayer game. My boys loved that they were all able to play this together.
The winner is the player at the end with the most points. You can receive points for finding a near ship spot (50pts), a ship piece (100pts), or rescuing a ship (200pts). There are also bonus points to be earned. You will get extra points if you rescue a ship you already found a segment of. You also get extra points for getting the most correct answers while filling up your charger.
Maths Invaders Online Worksheets
Another bonus that EdAlive has included with this program, is math worksheets.
To be honest, we did not even use any of these. I checked out this section of the website but the boys were having so much fun with the game that I did not feel the need to interrupt the fun by making them do worksheets.
If you child does like doing worksheets, there are so many different ones available! You can really customize the worksheets to your child’s needs which is absolutely amazing.
Final Thoughts
We really enjoyed this program.
I feel like it is a very well designed program to encourage children to work on math and to help develop their confidence and speed in a way that doesn’t apply unneeded pressure and stress.
It is just fun.
