Top 3 Child-Friendly Hikes Near Revelstoke, British Columbia

It can be hard to find child-friendly hikes when you are unfamiliar with the area.  When we first visited Revelstoke, British Columbia, I scoured the internet for child-friendly hikes in the area that still showcased the natural beauty of the area.  These are my top 3!

 

The Skunk Cabbage Boardwalk

The Skunk Cabbage boardwalk is a child-friendly hike in Mount Revelstoke National Park.

The trailhead and parking lot are located just off the Trans-Canada Highway.  There are washrooms available which makes it a great place to stop and stretch your legs if you are just driving through the area.  A large picnic area, with breathtaking views, is also available before you access the trail.  The picnic area is a large green space which is also a great place for kids to get out and run around – there is a drop off at the river bank so make sure your children are aware of this.

The boardwalk is a 1.2km loop.

It is, for the most part, stroller friendly.  There is a section before the boardwalk loop that is a trail through the woods.  This area could be difficult to pass depending on the type of stroller you have, especially if the ground is soggy from rain or recent snow melt.  You can see this path in our video below, and decide if you want to take your stroller or not with you.  There are viewpoints along the boardwalk that have stairs.

If you go in early spring, the skunk cabbages may be in bloom.

When in bloom, you will fully understand why the skunk cabbage got their name.  This may or may not make this a child-friendly hike depending on your children.  One of my children is very sensitive to smells which would turn this hike into one big complaint, so we like to do this hike after the skunk cabbages have finished blooming.

Besides the beautiful vegetation, there is also an abundance of wildlife.  There are many birds and insects in the wetlands.

We have also seen evidence of bears along the trail.  Please remember that bears are not tourist attractions and are wild animals.

 

 

The Giant Cedars Boardwalk

The next of our child-friendly hikes is the Giant Cedars Boardwalk.  Giant Cedars is only 2.6km away from The Skunk Cabbage Boardwalk – which is why they work perfectly together on this list.

This trail is short – it is only 500 meters.

There are lots of stairs so, unfortunately, it is not accessible with a stroller.  My 2-year-old did just fine with all of the stairs, though he did go down a few on his bum.  If your toddler’s do well with stairs, this boardwalk is an excellent place to stop and let them explore while you see some beautiful scenery and absorb the knowledge from the different signboards places around the boardwalk.

The Giant Cedars Boardwalk is aptly named.  The path is lined by huge cedars trees.  There are also very large hemlocks, ferns, and a variety of other plant species.  With all the plant life, the air smells so fresh inside the area of the boardwalk.

The way to sun glistens in through the treetops makes it look like such a magical place.

Hemlock Grove

The third hike on our list of child-friendly hikes is Hemlock Grove.

The Hemlock Grove boardwalk is located in Glacier National Park.  This 400-meter boardwalk is completely stroller accessible and is the easiest walk in Glacier National Park.

Some of the trees in this forest are over 350 years old and are giants.  The undergrowth around the boardwalk is so dense and is wonderful to see such life thriving in the beautiful mountain range.

Jack, our 7-year-old, was amazed by a fallen tree which allowed the width of the tree to be better understood.  The diameter of the tree was as wide as his arm span!  You can see that tree in our video from the Hemlock Grove boardwalk.

 

Child-Friendly Hikes

These are just 3 child-friendly hikes that we have done around the town of Revelstoke, British Columbia.  There are many more waiting for us to discover them.

Each hike is beautiful and unique in their own way.  There is no favourite amongst these hikes, I would suggest you visit them all!  They are all very close together and are all easy, child-friendly hikes so you can do all 3 within an afternoon.
