Cooperative board games are great for children of all ages. Little ones can join in because the rest of the players can help and older children can take a leadership role and build confidence.
Why We Love Cooperative Board Games
In our home, we love to pick from our collection of board games whenever we need to disconnect from the electronic world. So often we, parents included, get wrapped up in technology and need to interact with our world in a different way. We find board games, cooperative or not, to be a great way to reconnect as a family and also use our bodies and minds in different ways.
My children are all fairly close in age, but because I have 4, the age difference between my first and fourth is quite substantial in terms of interests and capabilities. The great thing about cooperative board games is that they are great for so many different ages. When a more challenging game is selected, little ones can be helped by another family member and really feel like they are apart of a team. For cooperative board games, that are targeted more towards the younger crowd, my older children can take a leadership position and manage the game flow (ie reminding someone that it is their turn!).
If you have a child who hates to loose, this might also be a great way to get them into playing board games in a less stressful, less competitive way.
Cooperative Board Games
I have tried to include a wide variety of age ranges within these selections. If you have other recommendations, please let us know in the comments below!
Hoots Owls Hoot
One of our favourite games is Hoot Owls Hoot. The goal of the game is to get all of your the owls fly back to the nest before the sun comes up. To move your pieces, you match the colour on the card you select to the next available space of that colour.
Recommended for Ages 4-8.

**We actually called his game Hoot Hoot Owls for the longest time but that is not the correct name!
Goodnight Goodnight Construction Site
Do you have a child who loves construction vehicles? If so, this might be the game for you! My children have all gone through phases where they have been enthralled by construction vehicles and could spend hours watching a construction site.
The objective for this game is to help all the different construction vehicles get to bed before the sun goes down.
Recommended ages 4+.
There are also many great books that go along with this game. My children love to play this game and will also take the characters from the board game and act out the stories. It is definitely a favourite.

Wildcraft! is an herbal adventure game by Learning Herbs. Your characters head up the mountain in search of huckleberries to help grandma make a pie. Along the way, you use different herbs to help with troubles you run into along the way.

Mermaid Island
The mermaids must get to the island before the sea witch does! In this game, the players spin to move forward on the board as they swim towards the island. Along the way you can pick up magical wands to help defeat the sea witch. But don’t get caught!
This is a quick game and only takes around 15 minutes.

Forbidden Desert
You must recover the pieces to the legendary flying machine that has scattered throughout the desert. To win the game, you must work together with your teammate who have different abilities and use the resources available to you.
Recommended for ages 10+ but my younger children certainly enjoy playing this game as well. This is also a game that my husband and I will play on our date nights. It’s quite fun.
