It is FINALLY spring! We had a long, cold winter but it is time to spring clean. I need to do a spring clean in the garden. We have a long to-do list to get the backyard ready for summer and would love to motivate you to get out into your yards and get your backyard or garden space ready for the spring and summer. Clean with me!
I am a list maker. Having a to-do list helps to keep me organized and on track, especially when it comes to cleaning. Today I have a few tasks which need to get done now that the warm weather has arrived and spring cleaning can finally be started outside. We cleaned up the yard before winter came but, after 6 months of neglect, it is need of some attention.
To-Do List
- clear the path where the skunks pulled out garbage and mulch
- pick up any trash that may have blown into the backyard
- pick up the dog poop
- pull out dead plants from last year’s vegetable garden

Skunk Debris
Did you miss the story about the skunks?
This January we received quite a shock one evening when we let our dog, Cosmo, out for a bedtime pee. He immediately took off and ran under the deck. He is 100lbs so we did not even know he could fit under the deck! We assumed it was the neighbour’s cat, but when my husband got his flashlight out and looked we discovered that it was a skunk. I do not know how Cosmo did not get sprayed, but we were lucky.
The next night, we looked onto the deck before letting Cosmo outside and there were THREE skunks on our deck!
YES! THREE SKUNKS!!!
We called out landlord and they called a pest control company. The pest control company has trapped 14 skunks. Those skunks sure left a mess in our yard. They pulled out garbage and mulch from under the deck and our garden bed and moved it all over the yard.
It has been a few weeks since we have seen skunk activity. Thank goodness!
But because of those skunks, we have a lot to clean up. There was garbage pulled out from under the deck and then covered in snow. Now that the snow has melted, we are able to pick up all those bits and pieces.
It feels great to finally have that checked off our to do list!
Trash Pick Up
Does anyone else have a yard that seems to accumulate all sorts of trash from the wind?
There is a school playground within meters of our backyard. The school grounds are elevated and whenever the wind blows from that direction, any little bits of debris tends to blow right into our backyard and then get stopped by our fence.
We deal with the debris all year round, but I ignore it over the winter months. After the snow melts, I get to go outside and pick up the little pieces of paper and wrappers that get blown into our yard. I always encourage my children to pick this up with me because it teaches them why it is so important to not litter.
Dog Poop Pick Up
It’s spring, and I have a dog. Need I say more?
I keep thinking that I should hire one of those dog poop spring clean services. I dislike picking up dog poop, but I love my dog. I am never willing to pay for it though.
Have you ever used a spring clean service for your dog(s)?
Getting The Garden Ready
In the fall, we like to leave plants because it adds winter interest for the garden but it also provides a home for many overwintering insects.
Now that the snow has melted and insects are waking up, it is time to do a spring clean on all those plants.
We have seen the bees emerging. The other day our front yard was covered with hundreds of ladybugs. With all the insect activity we felt it was safe to pull up the old plants and to start the prep the garden beds for the upcoming gardening season.
